This year I wanted to try adding thin velvet ribbon in the tree which I’ve never really done before so I’ve been on the hunt for some pretty ribbon to try to bring my idea to life. I found this blonde color and ivory color ribbon from Amazon and they are both soooo pretty I’m going to use for wrapping presents and then this beautiful black velvet ribbon I used on our our tree and wreaths. Excited to see how it turns out! Sticking to my neutral theme I also found these cute multi-color velvet ornaments from Target that come in a full set. – the pictures don’t do it justice at all, otherwise I would have ordered multiple. The colors are soooo pretty together and feel really high-end.

Anthropologie never fails me when it comes to finding cute holiday decor for the home! I thought these holiday light up houses were so adorable for mantle decor or to bring in a festive feel to your bookcases. Lastly, I had to get this gingerbread house doormat for the home and our office – Anthro always has the cutest holiday mats!

For the first time I can remember, I’m actually feeling ahead of the curve with Christmas shopping this year. I still have a few people left on my list – it seems like every year it’s the same few that are the hardest to shop for haha. A lot of you guys have said the toughest people to shop for are parents/in-laws so I wanted to put together a few of my favorite gift ideas for parents. I feel like with parents, they’ve usually accumulated enough ‘stuff’ over the years so I like to focus less on tangibles and more on experiences or services that will make their life just a little easier. I feel like the excitement of experiences usually beats the excitement of just having something to open so I love the idea of more experience or service-focused gifts, plus they usually make for more unique gift ideas you maybe have thought of before.

PEACE OF MIND WITH A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

SimpliSafe: My parents are building a house right up the street from us so they’ll be splitting time between Montana and Utah. I wanted to get them a security system for their new house so they could have peace of mind while they are away. After doing a little digging, I landed on SimpliSafe – it gets amazing reviews, and has options to protect everything from burglary to water damage, freeze, and more. The install is super easy (which is a must because the last thing I wanted to do is give my dad another chore when he’s so busy already). It’s also a super clean look so it blends in with decor. Plus, it’s easy to use – you can control everything right from your phone. (While I was researching, the SimpliSafe reviews won me over and I actually ended up getting a system for me and Cody too since I have been so annoyed with our current alarm system lately 😂). They have been running sales off and on throughout December – The Haven (the package I ordered) is on sale for 40% off right now. (And no contracts, ever! Which is super nice).

THE GIFT OF RELAXATION:

Take luxury to the next level and organize and in-home massage for your parents. There’s nothing more relaxing than rolling out of a massage bed and into your own bed after a long day. Cody and I have used Zeel before – you can select what type of massage, what pressure, etc to make sure you get a massage you’ll love. One year I actually got Cody a massage table for Christmas one year so we could do our own at-home massages so it could work as a good gift ideas for your S/O too.

THE GIFT OF TIME

Walmart+/Grocery Subscription: One of my most used services (I literally use it multiple times a week haha) is my grocery delivery subscription. I use Walmart+ and Target Same Day Delivery and they are probably the single best investment I’ve made this year based on how often I use it. It saves so much time going back and forth from the store, especially when I realize I forgot an ingredient, and has ended up being the move convenient thing ever. Love this idea for parents – another thing you know will make their life a little easier that doesn’t end up gathering dust on a shelf.

THE GIFT OF A CLEAN HOUSE

Nothing gets me feeling more frazzled than a messy house so I always look forward to when we have someone come deep clean our house.  I feel like whenever I attempt to do it myself, by the time I finish cleaning one room, the last one is already a mess haha. Give your parents an extra special treat and splurge on a cleaning service or gift card so they can schedule a deep clean – maybe after your kids have been at their house over the holidays, before they are hosting a get together, or just to catch up after the busy holiday season. If you don’t think a professional cleaning service is their cup of tea, this UV sanitizing wand is a great way to give the same clean feel that they can use for years to come.

THIE GIFT OF MAKING NEW MEMORIES

Vrbo Trip together: There have been multiple years where instead of tangible gifts, my parents have taken our whole family on a trip. It always ends up being one of my favorite gifts, so we ended up going the same a few years. Those trips have been some of my favorite family memories together and it’s a gift you’ll remember for years to come. Nothing beats making new memories together ❤️. We love Vrbo for family trips, especially to be able to have game nights or movie night all in the same space instead of splitting up into individual hotel rooms. For something they can open, a Vrbo gift card is a great idea.

THE GIFT OF A PRE-PLANNED DATE NIGHT

Plan an epic date night for your parents that they will remember for years. It could be tickets to a cool event in their area, a gift card to a new restaurant they would love, or you can jump on Tripadvisor to get some ideas for creative activities in your area that are outside the box. Cody and I love doing new things together but sometimes we all need a little push to actually make it happen. For a date night that doesn’t require as much planning, you could get a cute date night in a box – something seasonal like this one or this cold-case mystery box for the crime podcast lovers.

We love cinnamon rolls and I’ve gone through tons of recipes trying to find our favorite and I promise this one won’t disappoint. One of my favorite parts is the cream because even if you mess up and make the dough a little too dry (like I did the first time I made) it brings moisture back in and makes them super soft! I got a big part of the cinnamon roll part from this Cinnabon recipe on Tastes of Lizzy T but tweaked a few things like the frosting. The frosting is Cody’s recipe he has made since we first got married.  So below is our version of the recipe for our family favorite cinnamon rolls! I hope you guys love them!

The below recipe is for 12 rolls. I will either double or do 1.5 because we eat them for a week. I personally think they are WAY better if you bake them, frost them, stick them in the freezer, and then warm them up in the microwave. I don’t even eat one when they come fresh out of the oven because I think in the freezer the frosting melts in or something. I don’t know… they just taste better. Also it makes it really great if you want to make for a birthday or Christmas breakfast you don’t have to wake up way early to do it, you can make them the day before.

INGREDIENTS (serves 12):

Dough:

1 cup warm milk (110° degrees)

 2 1/2 teaspoons instant dry yeast

2 large eggs (room temp)

1/3 cup salted butter (I set mine out in the morning so it’s room temp and soft, if you forget just barely melt it, if you melt it all the way it won’t turn out the same)

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (divided) **This is where my recipe differs from there. Since I’m at a higher elevation it was too much flour so I tweaked it a few times and found the sweet spot: 3 and 3/4 cup to 4cups. You want the dough to be a little sticky and elasticy.

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Filling:

1/2 cup salter butter (almost melted)

1 cup packed brown sugar

2.5 tablespoons cinnamon

1/4 cup of sugar (the original recipe has no sugar I add a tiny bit)

1/2 cup heavy cream (*for pouring over the risen rolls ) the cream is what makes the rolls super soft, I never use the full amount of cream I always just do less. If you want them really gooey then do full amount but we usually do a little more than half of what it calls for.

Cody’s Frosting Recipe:

I asked Cody for his recipe and these are his exact words haha:

1 stick of butter – thawed not microwaved –  blend butter with mixer  first (about 30 seconds until it’s completely fluffy)

Add 1 tablespoon of good vanilla not the crappy one 

Add 1/3 cup milk 

Pour powdered sugar to the consistency you want. I never measure it. We like it thicker because we freeze rolls. (I asked Cody to guess how much and he said he guesses around 2 cups of powdered sugar).

INSTRUCTIONS:

(these are pretty much their step by steps, with a couple things we added, but she has some great tips that helped me)

1. Pour the warm milk in the bowl of a stand mixer and sprinkle the yeast overtop.
2. Add the eggs, butter, salt and sugar.
3. Add in 3.5 cups of flour (save the rest and only add if your dough needs it- remember you want it to be kind of sticky still 🙂 Mix using the beater blade just until the ingredients are barely combined. Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes so the flour has time to soak up the liquids.
4. Scape the dough off the beater blade and remove it. Attach the dough hook.
5. Beat the dough on medium speed, adding in up to 1/2 cup more flour if needed to form a dough. Knead for 5-7 minutes or until the dough is elastic and smooth. The dough should be tacky and will still be sticking to the sides of the bowl. Don’t add too much flour!
6. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray.
7. Use a rubber spatula to remove the rough from the mixer bowl and place it in the greased large bowl.
8. Cover the bowl with a towel or wax paper.
9. Set the bowl in a warm place and allow the dough to right until double. I like to turn on the oven to the lowest setting for 1-2 minutes. Then turn off the oven and place the dough to rise in there. It normally takes about 30 minutes for the dough to rise. Do not allow the dough to rise too much or your cinnamon rolls will be airy.
10. While the dough is rising, prepare the cinnamon filling. In a medium bowl, combine the soft butter, brown sugar, sugar  and cinnamon, mixing until well combined. Set aside.
11. Sprinkle your counter with flour. Turn out the dough onto the pastry mat and sprinkle the top of the dough with additional flour.
12. Flour a rolling pin and roll the dough to about a 24×15″ rectangle don’t overly stress about size of the rectangle it doesn’t have to be exact but you want it close.
13. Use a rubber spatula to smooth the cinnamon filling over the whole dough rectangle.
14. Starting on the long end, roll the dough up tightly jelly roll style.
15. Cut into 12 slices and place in a greased 9 x 13 baking pan.
16. Cover the pan and allow the rolls to rise for 20 minutes or until nearly double.
17. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
18. Warm the heavy cream until the chill is off. Don’t make it hot… you just don’t want it cold. It should be warm to the touch.
19. Once the rolls have risen, pour the heavy cream over the top of the rolls, allowing it to soak down in and around the rolls.
20. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-22 minutes, until the rolls are lightly golden brown and the center rolls are cooked through. Note… the time will vary based on how big the rolls are, what type of pan, how close the rolls are packed, etc. They could take up to 25-27 minutes. Check the rolls at 20 minutes. If they are getting too browned, cover loosely with foil for the remaining baking time.
21. While the rolls are cooling, prepare the frosting.

OUR FAMILY ADDITIONS:

22. Once Cody makes the frosting, and rolls have cooled completely, we frost all the rolls, put a piece of tin foil over them and stick them in the freezer. This makes it really easy to prepare in advance before your event or meal. You don’t have to rush day of!

23. Once they have been in freezer for a couple hours, warm them up in the microwave for 30-45 seconds depending on your microwave and they are DELICIOUS!!! Because we know we are going to be warming them up and the frosting melts a little we make the frosting pretty thick.

T minus 9 days to Christmas! There’s so much going on around this time of year that it’s easy for things to get lost in the shuffle. I love the gift-wrapping, helping kids pick out presents for their siblings, and wandering through store aisles even after I think I’m done shopping and seeing things that remind me of someone and grabbing it just because. 🙂 But I know it can also feel chaotic so I wanted to share some last minute holiday prep ideas, from last minute Christmas gifts to wrapping ideas, and more.

WRAPPING HACKS:

I have a love hate relationship with gift wrapping. I want to make the present pretty but about 5 presents into it at 11pm on Christmas Eve Cody is like why are you taking 15 minutes on one present hahah. So I’ve settled on doing one “special” gift for each kid I add little trinkets too and make super pretty. I don’t know if you guys have noticed but a lot of stores are super picked over right now as far as their wrapping selections but I found the prettiest wrapping papers in store at Kohl’s! I also love adding ribbons and other trinkets to the outside of the wrapped gifts. Sometimes I’ll just add some greenery, but for their 1 special gift I like to add something a little extra like a cute ornament (love this polar bear one!), candy, or a small holiday-packaged gift set (these were perfect with Mara’s pink wrapping paper!) just to make it feel special

I also got Cody this trio cup holder that turns one cup holder into three – it was an in-store find and something I never would have thought of but I know he will end up using it all the time.

For her: You can never go wrong with a cozy pair of slippers or a comfy throw blanket. Also love the idea of cute beauty gift sets – it’s the best time of the year to find already cute, pre-packaged sets and they are usually at a better price point than if you were to purchase separately. I also love getting kitchen stuff! Obsessed with this copper tea kettle  – it makes for the prettiest kitchen accent!

For kids: I have a feeling this Robot Combat set will be my kids favorite this year. It gets amazing reviews and is one of the hot ticket items this year. It’s remote-controlled and I love that it’s something they can do together! My kids also love doing crafts together (another gift to spend more family time together 🙂 so I love this art box and this rainbow craft kit.

For teens: The Instax mini cameras are always a huge hit with teens and come in so many cute colors! Such a fun way for them to be able to capture memories. Love my mornings & early cuddles with Ollie!

He loves to look out the window and watch the cars go by. When big trucks go by he makes a grunting noise it’s so funny.

I love the mornings with Ollie. He’s extra cuddly when he first wakes up. He’s such a busier baby than Beckam was so I love the morning cuddles while he’s still waking up, especially while he drinks his bottle. We are supposed to start weaning him off the bottle and I’m not excited about it 😂 he never took a pacifier but he likes to suck on his empty bottle like a pacifier so I’m kinda nervous to cut it out. 🙈 

Honest Baby is one of my favorite baby brands. We have used them since Beckam was a baby and now again with Ollie. The kids love the Kiehl’s mint flavor and it’s full of Vitamin E to keep your lips protected from the cold weather. My mom’s favorite Kiehl’s product is their hand salve. It has almost 500 reviews on Nordstrom alone and almost 5 stars. Definitely one of their holy grail products, so if you haven’t tried it yet, you have to! They also have it in a little holiday set with a lavender and grapefruit sent. These would also be great neighbor/coworker gifts. They smell so good and are super rich and creamy.

MY MAKEUP ARTIST’S PICK: KIEHL’S ULTRA FACIAL CREAM

My makeup artist’s first step when she does my makeup, without fail, is to apply Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream. The best start to a good makeup look is good skin and this Kiehl’s moisturizer is her favorite – it’s hydrating for 24 hours and super lightweight so it makes for the best base. I posted on stories to poll teachers and find out what gifts they actually want during the holidays and they had so many good ideas! A few things they mentioned they get a ton of and can’t possibly use them all: mugs, ornaments, and chocolates. A plant for their classroom that students can help care for, a new book to add to their class library (also mentioned games for the classroom as a good idea), personalized office supplies (love these pencils or this cute teacher stationery!) But hands down the most requested answer was wine and gift cards. I was also surprised many said they would love wine – this cute wine subscription box would be the gift that keeps on giving. (Or you could order for yourself and split up others as gifts this season.) And of course you can’t go wrong with gift cards. Anything for shopping, Starbucks, a local spa/massage, even a few mentioned for grocery stores. They said anything personalized for the classroom they love too! I thought this stationary is so cute and would be awesome to put their name on it so they can write noes 🙂 And if you aren’t doing teacher gifts this year, never under estimate a hand-written note from your kids. So many teachers responded how much they treasure those hand-written notes and save them for years!

Baby’s first Christmas is the perfect chance to pull the trigger on baby essentials (we still wrap them and put them under the tree so Ollie has something to open :). The tray is really large which I like. He’s outgrown the Snuggle Me Organic but it was 10000% one of our most used baby items. One thing on my holiday checklist is getting new ornaments for the kids every year.

My parents are building a house this year so I got them these cute ornaments as a memory!

When I was a kid, my stepmom would always get me a new ornament every Christmas – something to represent my year, big milestones, hobbies, or whatever I was into at that point. We’ve continued the same tradition with our kids – both with new ornaments and painting/DIY our own ornaments. We dress up in matching holiday PJs and put up the trees. We have a tree we set up in the living room and then another kids’ tree with all the ornaments we’ve made and collected throughout the years and every year it’s like a walk down memory lane! My hope is when the kids grow up and have families of their own I’ll give them a special box of all their ornaments through the years. I will always treasure traditions passed down from generation to generation, but also love trying out new activities, so I wanted to put together a list of some holiday checklist with tradition ideas, old and new:

Last winter after Ollie was born and we were spending more time at home, we got in the habit of doing a new puzzle together as a family every month. The dropping temperatures have helped revive that tradition and it made me realize how much I missed having a puzzle out to work on with the kids. I told Mara to pick one out and they chose this Disney one. It has three different puzzle piece sizes – small, medium, and large – so it’s actually designed for everyone in the family to be able to enjoy together. We also got this Marvel Monopoly game that we broke in last weekend with Mara and Wes – such a fun twist on a classic fave!

I have been dying to take Ollie to Disney for his first time (well he was in my belly the first time but that doesn’t really count ;). I ordered a few more Disney pieces to bring some of the magic home and create some of those early Disney moments until he can go in person. Honestly I think it will make his first visit to Disney even more special tying in all the memories from home. (Like these Mickey Mouse waffles for breakfast!)

They also had the cutest holiday mugs and plates! I let the kids pick outa set of holiday plates each year and I’m hoping when they are older they all take one to pass down to their kids. This year we went Disney with these matching cocoa mugs and dessert plates for each of them (this one for the boys and this one for Mara). I feel like they will be a holiday favorite every year when we pull them out! Also got this bowl-train set and can’t wait to use it for a Christmas party – maybe a hot cocoa bar with toppings or to hold sprinkles, etc for decorating sugar cookies.

My favorite holiday beauty look (and surprisingly easy to do!)

Life since Covid has made me a lot more of a minimal, bare-face type of a girl. But when I popped into Nordstrom to pick up my favorite holiday candle (swear by this one), I got super excited about all the holiday palettes. I got a few newb beauty cabinet additions and wanted to do a holiday beauty look. If there’s one product you neeeeeed it’s this stunning eyeshadow palette. So good! Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of products and you can see the tutorial here.

1. MOISTURIZER

The first step of any successful makeup look – good skin! It’s been a minute since I’ve shared my latest skincare routine and need to share an updated one, but one product that’s been a staple since I discovered it is this moisturizer. It is a splurge, but my skin has seen such a difference – it is worth every penny. It’s one of those skincare products that your skin starts to crave if it takes you too long to re-order after you finish a bottle.

2.  EYESHADOW (HAPPY GLOW SHADES)

The holiday eyeshadow palettes out this year are sooooo good!! For this look, I used the ‘Happy Glow’ shades from this palette. The pigments so rich and beautiful and blend/build really well. I was shocked at how well some of the shimmer tones came through.

3.  BROW POWDER & BROW GEL

These is my go-to for brows – been using them both for years. It stays all day and comes in so many shades – I’ve used the pencil and pomade but the powder is by far my fave!

4. PRIMER

If you aren’t using a primer, you’re doing your skin and your final makeup look a disservice. Not only does primer make for a beautiful base, it also helps prolong and preserve your makeup so it lasts all day, AND it acts as a barrier to keep products from clogging your pores. For this look, we used this cult favorite – it goes on so smooth and has a pretty mattifying, blurring effect so your foundation goes on super smooth.

5. FOUNDATION – SHADE 360 BISQUE (N)

I’ve been using this foundation for years. It lasts aaaaaall day! It’s a medium to full coverage and has a super velvety matte finish that make for the prettiest base for any beauty look. I have super sensitive skin that can get irritated with a lot of foundations, but I haven’t had a single issue with this one. Love the coverage!

6. HIGHLIGHTER

I love all things Benefit, my makeup artist got me hooked on this highlighter. This palette has multiple bronzers (I swear Hoola looks good on any skin tone!) – I used the ‘Cookie’ highlighter. It blends so well and it’s the prettiest tone that works so well with pink and tan undertones.

7. EYESHADOW (HAPPY GLOW SHADES)

I added a smudged eyeshadow under my eye using the same palette. Can’t wait to try the rest of the colors – the ‘Seduce Glow’ especially is so pretty! Also got this palette with more gorgeous holiday colors that are also subtle enough to use for an every-day beauty look.

8. LIP LINER

This lip liner is universal – it’s so pretty on EVERY skin tone! If you haven’t given in the obsession, do it. You won’t regret it!

9. LIP GLOSS (SHADE: HALLUCINATION)

I got this gloss a few weeks ago and have been wearing on repeat (last seen here). It’s the prettiest nude gloss and the perfect finishing touch to a full makeup look or you can wear it on its own with a fresh face.

10. SETTING SPRAY

Another cult favorite – if you haven’t tried a setting spray (especially this one) it’s a game changer! Not only does it help your makeup last all day, it also helps keep it from transferring to your clothes (or worse yet, your S/O’s clean white tee haha). Also got this stocking stuffer version!

I’m excited to share our cozy basement family room. We have a living room upstairs and then a more casual family room hang out spot downstairs. When we picked out furniture for that space I knew I wanted an oversized, comfortable sectional to keep that space feeling homey. I found this one from Joss & Main and immediately loved it. We got in in the ‘Conversational Ivory’ color and it’s super comfortable and fits the whole family, and then some. Can’t recommend it enough! The ends also recline out which is an extra bonus!

Our family room has a view of the kitchenette and theatre room which we did in a deep blueish/green, so I knew I wanted to keep our living room pretty neutral, plus it makes a really versatile, neutral palette that you can transform with season accessories (i.e. all our holiday decor!). I loved this black console table and it fit our TV wall perfectly, plus it has great storage for games and remotes. We also got these pretty leather armchairs – I love the warm tones they add to the space!

Can’t believe how early it gets dark now! I feel like I always forget until winter comes and I’m like is it 10 o’clock?? Oh wait it’s 5:30! One of our favorite things to do with the long nights is MOVIE NIGHT! Cody especially loves the movies and he’s got the kids into them too. We have all been counting down the days for Disney+ and were so excited when it launched! I love being able to watch the Disney classics and they have really good series too. Mara and I are currently hooked on High School Musical: The Musical haha it’s so good ;).

But let’s talk movie night – there are tons of ways to spice up your movie night to make it feel even more magical. 

1. Pick a theme. Based on the movie you pick, put together treats and have the kids dress up according to the theme.
2. Build a fort: Put together a blanket fort to cozy up in during the movie. 
3. Pretend you’re at a restaurant: When Mara and Wes are over she loves being in charge of making popcorn and drinks and the kids like to “take our orders” and serve it like a restaurant before the movie starts. 🙂 
4. Movie trivia: We all have classics we love to watch over and over. Pick one of your favorite classics and and then play a game of movie trivia that ties into the movie.

It has been so nice having all of the best stories I grew up with all in one place on Disney+. You really don’t realize how many childhood movies you may have forgotten about until you start scrolling through the Disney+ movie collection. Beyond the classics, they also have tons of Pixar and Marvel movies (not to mention the latest Star Wars release, The Mandalorian), so there is something for everyone in the family.
