Picnics – such a great mom & son date night

As Beckam has gotten older, I’ve noticed that Cody always has a million cool ideas of things to do with Beckam. Riding motor bikes, soccer-bouncing contests, ninja obstacle courses – especially now that Beckam cit old enough to keep up with Cody. They share an interest in a lot of the same things so it’s easy for them to find things to do. (And it’s the same with me and Mara. We can always go get pedicures or go shopping.)

I love the relationship Cody and Beckam have so much but it’s also made me realize that with the boys, I have to put more effort into activities that don’t come second nature to me so I wanted to think of creative ways to spend time together and make new memories this year. So that’s the back story behind why I made this list of mom & son date night activities – I wanted to have a list of cool, fun ideas of things that we could do together so every time he says, “Mom, do you want to play with me?” I have a whole list of ideas to pull from instead of just wasting time trying to brainstorm ideas.

I shared the Q&A on Insta stories a week or so ago and there were so many great ideas so I put together a little graphic of bucket list activities for you guys to print out or just save to your phones for a quick and easy reference point. Hope this list is helpful! I made it specifically with mom & son time in mind but it really could work for girls too if you’re looking for more ideas!

LOOK 1: 10/10

This was Beckam’s favorite look. He started with a 9 thinking he had to choose between 1-10 and 9 was the highest but then he switched to a 10/10. He loves sportswear as much as his dad, so I wasn’t surprised.

Beckam used to love skinny jeans up until he started kindergarten- I don’t know what it was but all of a sudden he refuses to wear jeans! I think it has something to do being able to do his ninja tricks at recess haha. So now he hates wearing denim otherwise I think this would’ve been another winning look. If I get my vote, I give it a 10/10. Jeans are such a back to school staple and I was dying at how cute he looked in these. (on sale under $20). I kept them and said sometimes you have to wear jeans to certain events, so hoping I can convince him to give denim another chance haha.

I made him try on a sweatshirt when it’s 100 degrees outside, so he docked points for that 😂 but he said it would be a 9 if it was fall/winter. LOVE these cute logo Nike shorts. They come in multiple colors. The whole look reminds me so much of Cody, so it’s another winning look in my book.

With a 5 year gap between Beckam and Ollie, it’s almost like I’m having to learn everything all over again. There are so many new brands and products that it’s almost like starting fresh (with the exception of some tried and true products :). I think one of the biggest differences is all the cute baby clothes especially for boys! I loved dressing B up, but I feel like there are so many more options now. One of my newfound favorites is Kyte Baby. I was introduced to them a couple months ago and they have THE SOFTEST clothes ever! (Also hosting a giveaway on my IG – keep reading for details!)

APPAREL:

I love their selection of baby clothes! Their pieces are made out of bamboo (which helps regulate baby’s temperature) and soooo buttery soft! Honestly I was shook by how soft their products are. Not only do they have a great variety of silhouettes, they also have amazing color options and prints (how good is this rainbow print?!). The zippered footies are worth their weight in gold! They have a textured bottom to give them extra grip while babies/toddlers stand or start to walk. They also have toddler sizes up size 7 so you can get matching pajama sets for Beckam.

SLEEP BAGS:

One of the biggest tips I learned from working with a professional sleep trainer for Ollie was the importance of sleep sacks. They make a huge difference! Not only is it a sleep cue to help them get in their bedtime routine, but it helps prevent them from crawling out of the crib as they get older. Kyte Baby’s sleep bags are all temperature regulated, so you can use a thicker one during winter and a thinner one during summer. Such a good idea and again, so many great color options.

NURSERY/HOME:

Kyte Baby also has tons of pieces for the nursery and home. Their blankets are also made out of their super soft bamboo material (they have baby, kid, and adult blankets). The crib sheets are on my wish list but they sell out fast. Tons of color options but you just have to move quick when you see the color you want. 🙂 They also have a bath collection with robes from baby to adult, washcloths, brushes, and more. Need to try!

We are still trying to figure out landscaping for our backyard – so many of you guys weighed in on the pool debate so now it’s back in the running, haha. But we felt like we weren’t taking advantage of our backyard space, so when I found this cute kids’ patio set on sale I thought it would be the perfect solution. We had some left over gravel from another landscaping project, so we put it down to buy us some time before we decide if we are doing a pool area, pavers, grass, etc. I love the color combo and it’s all good quality but still lightweight so the kids can move it around easily. Both Cody and I still sit on it, even though its kids sizes, so it’s become a fun new hang out spot in the backyard. There’s no better way to break it in than with some yummy snacks. Mara usually loves playing server but all the kids loved hanging out on their new patio set while I put together some snacks for them.

I found some cute outdoor pieces for 4th of July – loved these striped and checkered napkins and got these reusable straws which are perfect for a backyard BBQ or any festive celebrations.  Also linking to our outfits and other cute summer pieces below. BECKAM’S BLAZER | BECAKM’S SWEATER | B’S JEANS

If you saw my ig post a week or so ago you know Beckam is in a “blazer” phase. I have NO clue where it stemmed from, but all of sudden he wants to wear a blazer jacket to school, the grocery store, everywhere. He wears them with jeans, sweats, whatever. I love when the kids go through these little phases and its something I know we will look back on when he’s older and talk about 🙂

I got these pants and I am so obsessed, I love the loose fit they feel like you are wearing pajamas but are uber chic. They come in a couple different colors. They would look super cute with white platform sneakers too. The whole Uniqlo collection is amazing. Everything is under $100, and I loaded up.  I got this white linen shirt. Its so cute on it’s own but also unbuttoned as a lightweight swim coverup. Is anyone else obsessed with all things linen right now?

Well, off to run some errands – we just got back from Florida and I have to head to NYC for work late tonight. Hope you guys had a great weekend!

Beckam is really into crafts these days, and this time of year I love making easy Christmas snacks that B looks at as a craft he can eat! Does anyone else have way too much junk food this time of year! Can’t help it 😉 I printed out a bunch of easy holiday recipes for us to do together.

He kills me in this little apron!  He was so excited to wear it 🙂

Beckam and I had so much fun making these Christmas tree brownies recently…and they were so easy!  Thought I would share the recipe along with a few of our other favorites 🙂  Happy baking!

DETAILS: B’s Apron | My Apron |

Easy Christmas Tree Brownies 

Ingredients:

• Hot cocoa (powdered)
• Mini marshmallows
• Large Piping bags (can be purchased at your local craft store). If you use smaller ones you will need less cocoa.
• Red Pom Poms (can be purchased at your local craft store)
• Brown Pipe Cleaners (can be purchased at your local craft store)
• Googly eyes (can be purchased at your local craft store)
• Chocolate chips *optional
• Circle Sticky tabs or velcro circles to adhere the red pom poms

Instructions: 

You will need two cups of powdered cocoa for each cocoa cone if you use the large sized bags.

• Fill your Piping bags with the hot cocoa mix (2 cups worth per bag- I used larger bags)
• Top with mini marshmallows, and then a small amount of chocolate chips.
• Tie them off it a knot.
• Wrap your pipe cleaner around the knot to make them look like antlers.
• Using double-sided tape, or sticky circles tape the googly eyes, and red pom poms to your bags.

Snowman Chocolate Bark 

Ingredients:

• 2 cups milk or dark chocolate chips
• 1 tablespoon shortening (optional)
• White candy melts
• Pretzel sticks
• White non pareil sprinkles
• Black and orange candy color OR black and orange food writers
• Small paint brush

Instructions:

• Line a baking tray with wax paper and set aside. Have your white candy melts, pretzel sticks and sprinkles ready.
• Place the chocolate chips and shortening (if using, it thins the chocolate for better consistency, but it isn’t necessary) in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 90 seconds at 70 percent power. Stir and continue to microwave at 30 second, then 15 second, intervals until fully melted and smooth when stirred well.
• Spread on the baking tray. Tip: Use a large offset spatula greased with shortening to help spread the chocolate. You won’t fill up the entire tray, just spread to fill about 80 percent of the tray. Immediately assemble three white candy melts for each snowman scattered across the chocolate. Add pretzel stick arms. Sprinkle white sprinkles over the chocolate.
• Place a few drops of black and orange candy color on a piece of wax paper. Use the paint brush to paint faces and carrots on each snowman OR use the edible writers. The edible writers are much easier and dry more quickly, but they are less vibrant on the candy melts.
• Let the tray sit at room temperature to set about an hour, or place in the refrigerator to set about 30 minutes. Cut the bark into pieces around the snowmen. Let set fully at room temperature or in the fridge.

Christmas Banana Snowmen

Ingredients:

• 2 bananas
• 1/4 of a carrot
• Handful of currents or sultanas chopped
• 3 strawberries
• 6 grapes
• 6 skewers

Instructions:

1. Cut the bananas into thick slices (approx. 9 rounds per banana)
2. Peel the carrot and cut into small triangular slivers for a pointy nose
3. Trim the stem from the strawberries and then cut in half. You should get two hats out of each strawberry
4. Cut the grapes in half. (We only used the smooth half and ate the stem end)
5. To assemble, thread three slices of banana on to each skewer followed by a strawberry hat and grape half. Gently press the currents into the banana slices to create eyes and the buttons on the body then add the carrot nose
6. Serve immediately
7. Tip: Chop everything up, place all the bits in separate bowls and then have the kids assemble the snowmen

Happy Sunday!  Hope you all had a great week. I’m excited to answer some questions this week – you guys send in the best questions!  I get a lot about being a step mom and the fertility journey so I made sure to include some of those below. 🙂

1. How often do you see your step kids?
We share custody with their mom, but she has primary custody. Its nice because we live close to each other so now that they are in sports and stuff we still get to go to their games and school activities and see them even on the days that we don’t have them.

2. Favorite TV shows right now?
We watch The Office or Seinfeld every night before we go to bed when we don’t have a series that we are in to. Or just to shut off for the night if we are watching an intense series. We just got into Designated Survivor which we love. We finished Ozarks last month which was so good! (This is an adult show so if you’re a younger reader I would stay away 😉

3. How do you stay so thin?
Because of my genetics I am naturally thin but if I’m not working out or being active I loose muscle fast and feel soft and kind of bloated haha I don’t really know how to explain it.  I workout to stay toned and because I love the way it makes me feel. It give me more energy for sure and helps with stress.

4. Do you follow a strict diet? Or if you want something do you let yourself have it?
I for sure indulge and let myself have it!  I will try different things like cutting sugars or not eating as much processed food or soda but as much as I wish I could, I can’t stick with those diets for too long so I try to set short term goals for myself. 

5. What are your favorite makeup products these days?  Favorite eyeshadow?
My favorite eyeshadow right now is this palette I just got from Bobbi Brown – its so pretty! Other products I am loving lately are: this bronzer, this mascara, this primer, this eyeliner, this foundation, and this brow pencil! **And good news!! Sephora is having their Beauty Insider sale right now…everything is 15% off through Monday! Time to stock up 🙂

6. How is your infertility journey going? What are your next steps?
We got some answers from the doctor last week and I’ll be sharing more soon – thanks for all of your sweet messages and notes it really means so much to me. ❤️

7. Favorite store to buy nice shoes?
Saks definitely has one of the best Designer shoe selections. I am pretty loyal to Nordstrom so I look there a lot too but their styles are more mainstream if that’s what you are looking for! Net-a-Porter and SSense have more unique styles.

8. What happens to all the clothes you model. Do you keep them? Are they loaned?
97% are either gifted or I buy them, on a rare occasion for really expensive jewelry where I have worn multiple pieces for a post they can be loaned to style shoots. A majority of the clothes are mine and the clothes I don’t keep I give to my friends and family. I will sell the higher end pieces and do blogger sales. I donate a lot to charity and I give a lot to my family’s church in Montana where they donate to foster kids that don’t have clothes.

9. Your favorite wardrobe staples?
For fall & winter, when it gets really cold I don’t get ready as much because I hate being cold!! So to be honest I am in sweats and comfy clothes a lot.  I recently got this new fuzzy hoodie and love this jacket and this pink corduroy jacket.

I think its worth investing in a nice handbag but thats always relative to your budget, don’t make yourself go broke over it!  Pick something that is timeless – pick something that is a neutral color. Buy one bag that is nicer that can work with multiple outfits instead of 5 cheaper ones. My favorite designer bag is this one. 

I found a tan suede bootie after my hunt last week! A couple of you actually emailed me and it was so sweet!  I have had them on repeat this week. I also just got this pair in the mail and I love love them!!

And lastly, a comfy pair of distressed jeans will always be one of my wardrobe staples. The pair I definitely wear the most and am most asked about are these.  

10. How did you feel about becoming a step mom?
It was never an issue to be a step mom because my parents got divorced when I was little and my step mom was always so great to me. She was such a good example and I grew up with a loving step mom so that really helped me when I became one. She always treated me with so much love that I was excited to be a step mom too 🙂 I’m not saying it isn’t hard, with any situation there are always hard emotions you have to navigate through. But the idea of being a step mom was never hard for me! Even if you didn’t have a step mom growing up it doesn’t mean you cant be a great step mom! I can’t imaging our family without Mara and Wes and I made a conscious decision early on to treat them as if they are my own. Go in with a mentality that you don’t want to replace their mom but that you will love them and treat them as your own.

11. What’s Cody’s profession?
He’s an entrepreneur and runs and manages couple different companies. 

12. How do you deal with mom guilt especially when traveling without Beckam?
Its definitely hard, but my parents live out of town and so I look at it as a good opportunity for them to watch Beckam and spend time with him – they usually come to town to watch him or he goes up to Montana to stay with them. He loves being in Montana and I love that he gets one on one time with them.  Some times are harder than others but I am always excited and re-energized to come home and be the best mom to him I can be!

13. How tall are you and Cody? 
Cody is 6’3” and I’m 5’7” and 3/4…I like to claim 5’8” 😉

Hi hi!!  Today I am excited to share the five things I have been loving lately…  

1. My new Starbucks drink. I love trying new drinks and always love the new holiday flavors!! You need to try the Salted Caramel Mocha with white mocha and extra caramel! Haha basically its pure sugar but it’s so good. I’m trying to do less sugar right now to help get pregnant – and I have been craving one SO BAD. You will thank me later 😉
2. Boots!  Now that its so cold outside I am loving all different kinds of boots. The boots in my pictures above that I also shared last week have still been on repeat!  Also loving these, these & these!
3. Neutral nails – I have been doing gel nails forever but my nails feel so weak lately I took it off a couple weeks ago and went with a super soft almost sheer color. I have gotten so many compliments on them this week!
4. The book Girl Wash Your Face – I’m just starting it a couple chapters in, my sister and laws and I are doing a book club together on it. I was having a really down day when I started it and it helped me get out of funk and change my attitude – its really good so far!
5. Beckam and his new love for arts & crafts!  I was an Art major in college so the artist in me has been dying for him to want to get crafty with me. He used to color for like 2 minutes and would be over it and lately he’s been wanting to do all things crafty. His preschool really pushes arts and crafts and it makes me so happy he likes doing them at home now too! He asked for a coloring book at the store the other day and I was SO excited haha. I know it’s silly but I have looked forward to the day we just sit and color by the fireplace.

A few weeks ago,  we got to celebrate one of my best friends on her most special wedding day!! Whitney started working with me five years ago, and she became like family. Her big day couldn’t have been more magical. Her wedding was up in the mountains at the prettiest lodge in Utah. The ceremony was outdoors and then there was a beautiful dinner inside. The decorations and flowers were so stunning!! I was dying over all the little details. She has such an amazing creative eye and it was so cool seeing all her hard work come to life! She looked so beautiful!! And can we talk about her veil and the fresh flowers she had in it?! So beautiful! 

I got a lot of questions about what we wore to the event, and I had just got home from fashion week so I ran to the mall a couple hours before the wedding to find a dress! I saw this and didn’t even look at price and when I went to check out It was under $20!!! I was shocked! and is perfect for any special occasion you have coming up. Beckam’s suit is currently sold out in the color he’s wearing, but I just ordered another one in a different color here!

October is finally here!!! My favorite time of the year for so many reasons.  In Utah the trees are the prettiest colors ever! We go on drives through the mountains for no reason, with no destination in mind. Cody got a new old school car that can go up in the mountains, or on rough trails so we went up the canyon and found the most gorgeous trails and trees. The temperature is finally not too warm, we get to pull out all of the cozy sweaters (yay for #sweaterweather!!) and boots I picked out this jean jacket that I am obsessed with – I love that it isn’t the basic jean jacket and has the faux fur sleeves and collar. It goes perfectly with my favorite new white boots!  This amazing sweater will also be on repeat…it’s seriously so so soft.

I can’t believe summer break has come to an end! It’s bittersweet because I love having the kids home from school and getting to spend so much time together, but the excitement of back to school shopping softens the string a little. 🙂 I always looked forward to back to school shopping when I was a kid and it’s been just as much fun as a parent now! Here are 4 back-to-school style pieces that every kid needs for the year ahead.

1. Something fun! You will never regret investing in a statement piece that your kids get excited to wear. Sure they might try to wear it 3 days in a row, but there are worse things, right? 😉 Mara loved this pom-pom sweatshirt and tulle skirt. It’s a fun outfit to throw into their school clothes rotation and every kid needs an outfit they feel extra special in and I love this one! It’s so fun to see the kids’ personality and style develop as they get older every year.
2. Staples they can mix and match. This is one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in buying kids clothes. The more versatile and mixable the pieces you buy, the more use you’ll get out of them. Think solids, layers, and classic patterns like stripes or camo. Gymboree’s latest campaign has lots of options to mix and match so just a few new pieces can go a long way and create multiple outfits.
3. Graphics. There’s a happy middle ground between busy prints and basic solids and it’s call graphics! They are a great way to let the kids’ personality show through and can help break up the patterned and solid pieces they own. I love the fun patches on this graphic pullover and it’s also pretty accurate. 😉
4. Everything comfortable. If it’s not comfy, my kids won’t wear it. (Actually, I’m the same way with my clothes haha!) So the biggest things to look for are comfort and quality – pieces that can handle whatever kids throw at them. That’s especially true of denim, which probably gets the brunt of a fun day. Love the jeans we found for Wes and B which are really soft and still durable. Gymboree is dialing up the comfort and softness of their line, so it’s a great destination for quality pieces.

Somebody asked me the other day how my style has changed and it made me stop and think! The first year or two of my blog I look back on a lot of my outfits and laugh – those were definitely the years I was finding my aesthetic, haha. The next couple years I pretty much lived in heels (even while I was pregnant with Beckam). My style was always pretty feminine, put together, and colorful. Now looking back, I feel like my style has continued evolving. Motherhood has shaped and changed my style. Now I would say:

1. Neutral Takeover: My closet used to look like a full rainbow. From clothes, to bags, to shoes, I was always drawn to bright colors. Now I gravitate towards neutrals – they are a lot more versatile so you get more wear out of them and they are a lot easier to mix and match. Don’t get me wrong, I still love color! But I usually stick to a lot of soft shades or pastels and only a few bright statement pieces.

2. Mixing High and Low End Pieces: This is one way I think most people’s style will evolve, at one point of another. My first outfit posts were all budget finds since Cody and I had just gotten married and were trying to save as much as possible. Once my clothing line and blog started to grow, I found myself splurging more and I eventually learned which pieces you should splurge or save on. Now I incorporate a mix of high-end and budget-friendly pieces and feel like I really get the most out of my pieces.

3. Comfort always wins: Growing up, I was the biggest tomboy! I think along the way once the blog became such a big part of my life, I started trading in my sneakers and sweats for stilettos and skirts. Recently I feel like I’ve reverted back to a laid back style, so it’s a balance of both comfort and fashion. At home I am always in my loungewear. Jockey just launched their Cotton Allure collection exclusively at Macy’s and they are so lightweight and comfortable. I usually hate to wear bras but I’m obsessed with their bralette! (Also love the pretty satin waistband on the bralettes and bottoms!)  The whole collection has that barely-there fit, they are really comfy whether you are dressed up for the day or lounging at home.

Happy Friday guys! Saks is having their sneak peek sale right now so I wanted to share some of my favorites. Whenever one of my favorite retailers has a big sale I finally pull the trigger on everything I’ve been procrastinating on haha. I have been needing new jeans that weren’t distressed (I think 95% of my jeans are distressed and realized I needed something different!) but I wanted something beyond a basic skinny jean, so I was so excited to find these 40% off. This is one of those pieces that I really liked online but I loved when I got them and tried them one – love when that happens! Obsessed with the frayed hem detail and the relaxed fit.

I have been wanting some more basic black tops – I feel like I have so many light colors – and this distressed sweatshirt (on sale under $100) is actually a t-shirt material so it’s perfect for spring or cool summer nights. You can transition it for a night out too – just pair it with heels and a red lip for an edgy, cool date night look. I also got this denim skirt (under $100) and love it with this sweatshirt. It’s the perfect casual cool outfit for running errands during the day. I’ve always loved a sweatshirt-mini skirt combo!

Happy Monday guys!! How was your weekend? Ever since it’s started warming up here we can’t help but to be outside as much as possible. These pics were from last week, One of B’s favorite things to do lately is ride his bike around the neighborhood (before everyone freaks out about not having his helmet one- he has one and wears it!! He just wanted to show our friends his new bike before Cody went to dinner with his friends 🙂 On laid back days like this I totally go for my typical mom uniform which usually includes comfy jeans (these are under $100) and a good basic tank. These distressed jeans are so comfy and I love wearing them with more casual outfits. I’m also obsessed with these layered necklaces (here and here) and have been wearing them with everything!

This weekend Mara and Wes were over (I always get so many dm’s asking why they aren’t in more pics, or who these new kids in my insta stories are lol, so I know I sound like a broken record but they are my step babies and we only have them part time 🙂 We started doing yard work this weekend, and some spring cleaning getting ready to have people over! We have a covered patio in the back on the second floor of our house and we haven’t done anything with it since we moved in, it had patio furniture I bought the summer before but we were gone so much it never got assembled 🙈 so this weekend we cleaned it all up and finally put the furniture together! I had this fun idea to build a tent and camp outside on the patio, sleep under the stars with the kids and eat popcorn all night. It was going to be perfect, so we borrowed my sister in laws tent, attempted to set it up – Cody and I ended up arguing over how to put up the tent half way into it lol, realized it wouldn’t stay up super well because it’s on a patio and we don’t have dirt to secure it down to, so needless to say my picture perfect tent night under the stars turned into a disgruntled mess! Ha! Cody and I ended up laughing about it because I think as a parent sometimes we create these “special” moments in our head of what we want something to be, and it doesn’t work out! So the next night, Cody pulled our mattresses onto the deck and set up the tv with popcorn and blankets all sweet to surprise us. We started to watch The Wizard of Oz, and realized how noisy it was and that we all get allergies haha – we bagged it again.

Now everyone is asleep in our room and I’m wide awake for some reason, watching reruns of The Office, and just thinking about how thankful I am for family…. anyways – have you guys had one of those moments you build up in your head and it doesn’t quite work out 😉

Beckam is obsessed with Dinos right now so we went with a Dino themed party. The huge T-rex ballon was definitely a favorite he stands up all by himself its so cute! It was funny because we got these RAWR balloons and then on the cake they spelt roar – and I never realized their is multiple ways to spell roar 🙂

We were dying Mio would go sit right by the T-Rex like he thought it was his friend. I thought he was going to bark and freak out at it because he barks at everything bigger than him, but he was so mellow like they were buddies lol.

I was so excited how the cake turned out. My friend Megan who owns Sweet Tooth Fairy made the cake she is SO TALENTED! Beckam really wanted gum balls and hot tamales (his favorite candies) on his cake and she added them in such a classic way with out making it look cheesy. Inside the cake there was a layer of frosting and M&M’s (his other favorite candy). It was such a GOOD CAKE!
