DIY facial night!

Someone woke up during my spa time and wanted to cuddle!

Pre-pandemic and pre-Ollie I was religious about going to get my facials. I would get a hydrafacial once a month, but now I think I’ve had 2 facials since last March. Tried a vampire facial for the first time last week! 😱 Will be sharing all my thoughts soon 🙂 I’ll always love the spa experience but I know a lot of places still aren’t open, or have limited availability if they are, so until you can get in for your next (or even first!) professional facial, bring the spa to YOUR HOME. Skincare is about consistency! So even if you are getting in for your facial take the time to pamper yourself at home too! So get cozy, and take a step into my spa routine at home 🥰

PREP & SET UP:

The first step to fake a luxury facial at home is to add a little luxury to the set up. Burn a luxe candle (obsessed with this scent, I’ve posted about it a lot but I just can’t get enough!), put on a Terry headband, your favorite pjs, wrap up in a robe, and find a relaxing playlist. (I usually take a bath or a hot shower before I start my spa day so I feel fresh and clean – it sets the tone 🥰)

CLEANSE:

First and foremost, make sure you remove any and all makeup or excess dirt and oils. I’ve been using these cotton pads for years and they are a favorite for removing makeup. Then you’ll want to do a double cleanse with a good face wash and cloth. I’m about to run out of this face wash and already I’m reordering because I don’t want to miss a day without it – it’s that good. It’s really gentle but also leaves my skin feeling refreshed and more radiant. If you don’t have a face wash you’re crazy about, try this one and let me know if you agree! It’s also important to use something to use a wash cloth, muslin cloth, or cleansing device to help exfoliate (just ordered this one – love that it’s deep cleansing and massaging! This one is specifically for sensitive skin.) Once you start doing the double cleanse and add a cloth or cleansing device, you’ll realize what a difference it makes.

STEAM:

Almost all facials start with a facial steam. It’s the best way to ensure a deep cleanse but also promotes circulation, collagen and elastin, but most importantly helps your skin absorb skincare products. I actually didn’t know until I started researching but it’s also super hydrating. (Not to mention so relaxing!) There are tons of at-home facial steamer options available but especially with your skin, you don’t want to take chances so make sure you get one with great reviews like this one. This is a top seller and super easy to use and heats up fast.

EXFOLIATE:

There are tons of options when it comes to exfoliating. If you’re in the mood for a face-scrub, I love this one. I saw Victoria Beckam post about it a year or so ago and immediately added it to my cart haha. For something less abrasive, you’ll want a product with AHAs and BHAs – this one is a super quick and convenient and a cult-favorite.. Either way, keep it somewhat simple – the last thing you want to do is over-exfoliate!

MICROCURRENT:

Hailey Bieber is my favorite celebrity – all her beauty and fashion fits are flawless! So a year or so ago when I saw her try the microcurrent facial I was dying to try it. My next trip to NYC I booked it. I loved the immediate results but you actually need to do it regularly to see the best long lasting results. This NuFace trinity device is the next best thing if you can’t fly to NYC or LA for a microcurrent facial every week (which really nobody can right haha). Honestly you won’t believe before and after pictures! It makes me want to be super religious about it because it’s the only way you’ll see lasting results.  It tones facial muscles and improves contour and skin tone while also reducing fine lines and wrinkles. You can also get the basic model here, but the Trinity comes with a lip and eye attachment to target those smaller areas. It’s really simple to use and takes just a few minutes every day, so it’s easy to get in the habit of it. They say even for 5 minutes for 30-60 days you will see results. I can’t wait to start seeing some results as I keep using it!

MASK:

One of my favorite parts of a facial is the mask. You can just sit, relax, and maybe even get a cat nap in while your skin is soaking up some TLC. These are a splurge but have amaaazing reviews online – will definitely be trying ASAP! I also love these eye masks – I think the eye area makes the biggest difference so if you don’t have time for a full mask, stick these on while you go about the rest of your day. This is an overnight sleep mask that just launched at Nordstrom but has amazing reviews!

MOISTURIZE:

Last but not least, a few skincare staples. After your mask you will want to moisturize.

If it’s during the day make sure you add a SPF of 30 or higher since your skin will be extra sensitive and susceptible to sun damage. I also love a good eye cream and lip treatment after a mask. I’m still on the hunt for an eye cream that I love but this one has a lot of good reviews and my friends always post about it, so just added to cart to try.

MIST:

This is another VB favorite I bought asap after I saw she loved and I am obsessed. My favorite part of the end of my at home facials is a refreshing elixir mist.

KEEP IT COLD:

And if you’re in the habit of at-home facials, you’ve probably already pulled the trigger on the beauty fridges. Not only are they so cute and extend the shelf life of some skincare products (nothing beats a cold eye cream), they also help with swelling and redness.

My favorite holiday beauty look (and surprisingly easy to do!)

Life since Covid has made me a lot more of a minimal, bare-face type of a girl. But when I popped into Nordstrom to pick up my favorite holiday candle (swear by this one), I got super excited about all the holiday palettes. I got a few newb beauty cabinet additions and wanted to do a holiday beauty look. If there’s one product you neeeeeed it’s this stunning eyeshadow palette. So good! Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of products and you can see the tutorial here.

1. MOISTURIZER

The first step of any successful makeup look – good skin! It’s been a minute since I’ve shared my latest skincare routine and need to share an updated one, but one product that’s been a staple since I discovered it is this moisturizer. It is a splurge, but my skin has seen such a difference – it is worth every penny. It’s one of those skincare products that your skin starts to crave if it takes you too long to re-order after you finish a bottle.

2.  EYESHADOW (HAPPY GLOW SHADES)

The holiday eyeshadow palettes out this year are sooooo good!! For this look, I used the ‘Happy Glow’ shades from this palette. The pigments so rich and beautiful and blend/build really well. I was shocked at how well some of the shimmer tones came through.

3.  BROW POWDER & BROW GEL

These is my go-to for brows – been using them both for years. It stays all day and comes in so many shades – I’ve used the pencil and pomade but the powder is by far my fave!

4. PRIMER

If you aren’t using a primer, you’re doing your skin and your final makeup look a disservice. Not only does primer make for a beautiful base, it also helps prolong and preserve your makeup so it lasts all day, AND it acts as a barrier to keep products from clogging your pores. For this look, we used this cult favorite – it goes on so smooth and has a pretty mattifying, blurring effect so your foundation goes on super smooth.

5. FOUNDATION – SHADE 360 BISQUE (N)

I’ve been using this foundation for years. It lasts aaaaaall day! It’s a medium to full coverage and has a super velvety matte finish that make for the prettiest base for any beauty look. I have super sensitive skin that can get irritated with a lot of foundations, but I haven’t had a single issue with this one. Love the coverage!

6. HIGHLIGHTER

I love all things Benefit, my makeup artist got me hooked on this highlighter. This palette has multiple bronzers (I swear Hoola looks good on any skin tone!) – I used the ‘Cookie’ highlighter. It blends so well and it’s the prettiest tone that works so well with pink and tan undertones.

7. EYESHADOW (HAPPY GLOW SHADES)

I added a smudged eyeshadow under my eye using the same palette. Can’t wait to try the rest of the colors – the ‘Seduce Glow’ especially is so pretty! Also got this palette with more gorgeous holiday colors that are also subtle enough to use for an every-day beauty look.

8. LIP LINER

This lip liner is universal – it’s so pretty on EVERY skin tone! If you haven’t given in the obsession, do it. You won’t regret it!

9. LIP GLOSS (SHADE: HALLUCINATION)

I got this gloss a few weeks ago and have been wearing on repeat (last seen here). It’s the prettiest nude gloss and the perfect finishing touch to a full makeup look or you can wear it on its own with a fresh face.

10. SETTING SPRAY

Another cult favorite – if you haven’t tried a setting spray (especially this one) it’s a game changer! Not only does it help your makeup last all day, it also helps keep it from transferring to your clothes (or worse yet, your S/O’s clean white tee haha). Also got this stocking stuffer version!

I didn’t realize how long it’s been since I shared a hair tutorial or even more how long it’s been since I’ve actually curled my hair! After sharing these curls last week I wanted to put together a step by step so you can recreate my look. Conair just launched their UNBOUND Cordless Auto Curler and it makes it really easy to get your favorite curls on the go. Keep reading to learn how to get this look:

Hands down the best part about the UNBOUND Auto curler is that you can curl your hair anytime, anywhere. You just charge it and throw it in your purse, suitcase, car, ANYWHERE, and you can pull it out and do a full look, or touch up your curls out and about.

How many times have you burned yourself with your curling iron? Since there’s a curl chamber, this one makes it next to impossible to burn yourself and it made me think it would be perfect for Mara to start learning to curl her hair. Such a great gift idea for the holidays too!

Settings: 400° for 12 seconds

The UNBOUND Cordless Auto Curler has multiple heat and timer settings that you can adjust to get your go-to curls or to switch it up if you want to try something new. Between my extensions and coloring, my hair is pretty dry right now, so I set mine to 400° for 12 seconds. If your hair isn’t as dry, I would try 1-2 temperature settings lower for 10 seconds to get these curls. (For tighter curls, set the temperature high and timer longer, or for looser waves, keep the temperature low and select a shorter timer setting.) When in doubt, take a few strands of your hair and test different temperature and timer settings until you figure out what you’re in the mood for that day.

Curl Direction: Left, Right, or MIX

There’s also an option to curl right, left, or mix, which allows you to control if you you want to curl away from or towards your face. For this look I curled away from my face, so when I’m curling on the right side of my face, I select L (left) direction and when curling on the left side of my face, I select the R (right) curl direction. There’s also a ‘MIX’ option which automatically alternates between the two for a messy, undone look.

Final Touches

I love the volume and beachy look of messy waves, so after I’m done curling I always brush the curls through with a wide tooth comb. Then just add your favorite hair products (I used an anti frizz spray after I finished curling, before I brushed out my curls) and voila you’re ready to go! Use products that do double duty: For those mornings when I’m running late or only have time for a few quick steps, Marisa swears by two-in-one products. I just got the Olay Regenerist Whip, which is a super lightweight moisturizer that goes on really velvety-smooth so it’s like a no-primer primer. It also absorbs instantly into your skin so you don’t have to wait before applying your makeup.

Break-out Woes: If you notice a blemish coming on, take action the night before and you won’t have to stress about it in the morning! Use a needle to poke a hole in a small liquigel capsule (anything with ibuprofen!) and apply to your problem spot. It will help reduce swelling and redness overnight and cut down on cover-up time come the morning.

Look Alive: One of my favorite makeup hacks is to apply a white or cream eyeliner to your lower waterline. It takes two seconds and will brighten your eyes and make your whole face seem more awake!

DIY: Kill two birds by mixing your moisturizer with your foundation to create your own tinted moisturizer. It creates a really natural coverage so it’s perfect for a fast, fresh-faced beauty look. Make the most of your powders: Another trick Marisa taught me was to spray my makeup brushes before using powder for a pigmented look. It’s perfect for eyeshadows when you want a color to pop more, or for a stronger blush or bronzer.

First step is getting rid of the those greasy roots! I used Nexxus Dry Shampoo Refreshing Mist to tame my 3 day unwashed hair.

Knotted Pony:

Section your hair into two pieces and use each section to tie a knot with your hair. Knot as many times as you want depending on length and secure with a clear elastic or large bobby pin. It’s easy for ends to slip out so I used the Nexxus Volumizing Hair Whip to run through the ends so they piece together more and help stay in.

Low Knot:

This look is basically taking the knot pony one step farther and  pining up the remaining hair from the pony with a bobby pin under the knot bun.

Messy Bun:

My tried and true hairstyle you probably see me in the most on my blog besides when I wear my hair down. Believe it or knot, a good messy bun takes practice! You can find my tutorial for perfecting my messy bun here (hint – a thick hair tie and a lot of texture is key!)

Low Messy Pony:

Just like top knots, no two messy ponys are the same. I love the piecey, easy look of a low pony. I back comb the middle for volume.

Low loose knot:

Start with a low ponytail and fold the bottom half of the strand underneath and secure it with an elastic. For a messy, piecey effect, loosen a few strands with a fine tooth comb. Keep a strand toward the front of your face separate, and wrap it loosely around your elastic and secure with a bobby pin. Since this hair style is a loose messy look, I like to secure with Nexxus Comb Thru Finishing Mist to help secure the loose pieces from coming undone.

Low Braid:

There’s nothing prettier than a thick braid! Use a volumizing product and hair spray and pull at the strands after you secure it so it has that loose “lived in” look to create more volume.

Hey guys! If you follow me on snapchat (@hellofashblog) you might have seen a sneak peek of my trip to L.A. a couple weeks ago to recreate some of the hairstyles from the Emmys with ghd. I spent the day with celebrity hairstylist David Babaii and learned so many little tricks from watching him style. Today I’m sharing a recreation of the January Jones look with the new ghd Platinum styler. The new styler is amazing! It makes your hair silky smooth and adds more shine to your hair. It’s actually designed for colored hair and so it keeps your color for up to 2 times longer. Check out my video below for a tutorial on how to achieve the Emmy inspired look.

1. Part your hair down the middle. I always part mine just slightly to the side because it frames my face more.
2. Divide your hair into 3 sections – two in the front on each side and one in the back.
3. Starting with the back, use the ghd Platinum styler to straighten strands about 1 inch wide. The styler has a curved edge so you can add a light curl at the ends without worrying about weird kinks.
4. When you work your way around to the front sections, rotate the styler 180 degrees before you pull it down through the ends of your hair. You can use this tip just for the section framing your face for a sleeker feel or I added more dimension by doing it through two additional sections.
5. For that last January Jones touch, tuck one section behind your ear and you are ready for anything from the red carpet to girls night out.

I’m not saying this because I’ve partnered with ghd for this post, but I am obsessed with this tool. I’ve always loved big hair and lots of volume. I wanted curls so badly that in high school I went for it and got a tight curl perm. Let’s just say big mistake. Now that the 70’s are back in full force it’s the perfect time to go for the big volume curls again. Today I am sharing a tutorial on easy, tight voluminous curls (without the crazy perm ;). I found this new little curling device at Sally Beauty – they have a great selection of hairstyling tools for almost anything you can think of. I used the BelissPRO Curl Genius and it made it so much easier for fast tight curls.

1. Start with clean, dry hair.
2. Plug in your curling machine. I used the highest heat setting and used the 12 second curl. There are three options: 8/10/12 seconds. For looser curls do the lower heat setting and less time.
3. I curl my hair in sections, going from side to side. No rhyme or reason to it – I just section the top layer on one side and pin it up with a clip or bobby pin so I can get the lower layers all curled. My front bang pieces are always the last pieces I curl and I never do a tight curl next to my face! I always do a loose curl to shape my face at the end.
4. Grab your hair in 1/3-1/2 inch stands. The smaller the strand, the tighter the curl and more volume you will achieve which is why I went for thinner strands.
5. In most cases I would say technique is the key to curls, but for this look the curling tool I used made all the difference. Start with the settings side (where the buttons are) closest to your head and place a strand of your hair, closest to the roots, directly through the middle and clamp down. The curling machine automatically draws the rest of the strand into the top, so you can keep it in place while it does all the work for you. It’s so crazy! It just sucks it in and does the magic.
6. Once your hair is in the machine you will hear a beep. It will beep in four second intervals letting you know the hair is being curled. Once the time is up, it continually beeps so you know how to release the hair. Hold the curl for 12 seconds for a tighter, high volume curl. Getting the uniform look with consistent curls can be hard with a curling iron  – that’s one of the reasons I love this machine for this look.
7. Once all my hair is curled I run my fingers through my hair and mess it up to break up the curls. I do the upside down head-flip a few times too to create that extra volume and finish off the look with that last loose curl to frame by face.

Et voila! A big hair, don’t care look and no (disastrous) perm involved.

A lot of you have asked about my eyelashes so I wanted to do a post sharing some of my tips. During the summer I wear lash extensions. Those of you who are unfamiliar with them, they are synthetic lashes that are glued to each individual lash to create volume and thickness. They are waterproof and last about 2-3 weeks before you need to get them filled. At about week 2 you start to notice some of the falsies falling out so I will use strip lashes with my lash extensions when I have shoots or days I want a fuller look. When I don’t have my lash extensions in I consistently use lash strips. The first time I put them on (back in college) I had no idea what I was doing! It took me like 45 minutes and lots of frustration trying to get them to work. Now through mistakes I have narrowed down the process and learned how to whip these babies on in 5-10 minutes.

Step 1: Get your supplies together. You will need a pair of lashes, scissors, eyeliner, glue, and tweezers. My favorite brand of lashes is Ardell. I’ve always gotten mine at Sally Beauty and I typically use the demi wispies in black. Those are my favorite.

PRODUCTS: TWEEZERS || FALSE LASHES || EYE SHADOW (SHADE: DEBUTANTE) || LASH GLUE || LIQUID EYELINER || MAKEUP BRUSH || SCISSORS

Step 2: Do your regular make up first. Lashes are the last step in your make up routine. I typically wear my lashes with a smoky eye and winged liner. I love this natural palette I got a few weeks ago. It’s also great for beginners because it tells you where to apply each color on the shadow case (i.e. all over base, lid, highlighter, crease, etc.).

Step 3: Hold the lashes up to your eye to measure the length. You don’t want them to be too long or they won’t sit on your eye right. Trim the lashes to fit your eye shape with scissors. You want to trim from the inner corner of the lashes.

Step 4: Wrap the lashes around a shadow brush to create a natural curve in the lashes. While the lashes are resting on the brush apply eyeliner.

Step 5: Apply Eyeliner. Black eyeliner is a 100% necessity for falsies. I don’t recommend brown, or any other color, use black. It helps fill in the gaps and hide the lash line where you apply the lashes.

Step 6: Apply the glue. My favorite brand is DUO Ardell lash adhesive. It lasts the longest and has worked best for me. It comes in clear or black glue I prefer the black. Squeeze a small amount onto your hand and gently slide the lashes through the glue. DON’T APPLY THE LASHES RIGHT AWAY. I think this is the biggest mistake people make. Allow 30 seconds for the glue to get tacky before you apply. They will stick in place a thousands time better if the glue is tacky and not wet.

Step 7. Set lashes on lash line. I use my hands and place them on the center of my lid. Sometimes that’s all it takes and sometimes the ends don’t stick right away so I have to use tweezers to set and hold the ends.

Step 8. Finishing touches. I run my eyeliner one more time over my lash line once I have applied the falsies. This just fills in any gaps I may have missed and hides any glue that may be showing. Somedays I apply mascara after – it creates a more dramatic effect but you don’t have to. It’s optional 🙂 I did a side by side (left with falsies and make up done) so you could see one eye with lashes and one with out.

Does anyone else’s hair come in last priority when you are in a rush to get ready? I’ve perfected this 5 minute messy curl for my on the go looks. It’s accented with an extreme side part to create volume to the look.   A deep part is all over the runways, from pony-tails to loose locks.  Play up the volume with some messy curls for a bombshell effect.

1. Start with your hair parted normally (mine is a little to the side normally) or down the middle.

2. Open the clip of the curling iron and wrap your hair one to two times around the barrel of the curling iron.  Do not curl all the way to the end! I leave at least two inches uncurled at the end. When your curling use big sections of hair. The bigger the section of hair the looser the curl will be the smaller the section of hair the tighter the curl will be. I only do two maybe three sections on one side of my head. Leave a few sections underneath (closest to your ear) straight so it doesn’t look so put together. I love this Hot Shot Tools Pink Titanium curling iron. I got it at Sally Beauty a couple years ago and it’s still my favorite.
   

3. Tilt your curling iron at a 45° angle to your body over your shoulder. A time crunch is your friend here – the quicker the curl the better. You’re going after more of a 3rd-4th day curl so you don’t want to hold the curl for very long.
4. Use a comb to create an extreme side part. Curl that section of hair by briefly wrapping it around the curling iron and slide it down quickly instead of holding it in place. You want the top curl on each side to be for a loose, messy wave.

5. Last step! Powder the heck out of your hair. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I literally dump my powder all over my hair. After you apply, run your fingers through your hair (pretend you are creating static with a balloon) and scrunch until you have the desired volume.
6. And voila you have that “I woke up like this” look in under 5 minutes. A lot of times my part does it’s own thing by the end of hair style but I think it adds to the messy look 🙂

A really easy alternative to this look if you want a little more edge is to slick back you hair on the side with less volume and pull it back with a bobby-pin. I love the MetaGrip Premium bobby-pins cause they are a lot longer than the pins you would find at your standard stores.

And for the days when no matter what you do your hair just won’t cooperate, you can’t go wrong with a twisted ballerina bun. Secure your fly-aways with a headbands like the DCNL headwraps. Headbands are actually really on-trend this season so it gives a polished look to a messy hairstyle. STEP 1: Lower Power

After you have applied your foundation and blush drop the power on the TEMPTU system to 2 or 3 o’clock. You will be applying the highlighter about 1 to 2 inches from your face, so you want the lower pressure so it doesn’t get blotchy. 

Step 2: Highlight

You will be highlighting five areas on your face to create definition and glow:

* Brows: Highlight below the brow bone along the hairs of your brow

* Corner of your Eye: Apply a small centimeter circle in the inner corners of your eye to attract light to your eyes

* Bridge of your Nose: Depending on the shape of your nose, will determine the width of the highlight. If you have a wider nose apply a thin straight line down the center of your bridge to slim the width. If you have a slim nose apply a wider highlight to exaggerate the width. 

* Cheeks: Cheeks can be a 3 step process. After you have applied blush to the rose of your cheek, highlight above your blush from the rose to the outer corner of your eye almost creating a semi circle. If you want to accentuate the bone more and create depth apply a bronzer below the blush in the shadow of your cheek bone. 

* Lips: We all love the look of a soft plump lip! Highlight around the outer rim on your lips before you apply liner and this will create light and volume. You can also apply a splash of highlight to the center of your bottom lip to create additional plumpness. 

Step 3: Tada you are done! 

The highlights will emphasize your features for a natural glow.
